Motability: The ‘Worry-Free’ Car Lease Scheme For People With Disabilities

MotaClarity is a motoring website for people with a disability and carers who are looking for information and advice related to disabled motoring. In this post, James from MotaClarity tells us about the Motability car and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) lease scheme, which helps people with a disability to drive (or be a passenger in) a safe and affordable brand-new vehicle.

The MotaClarity Guide To The Motability Scheme?
Motability is a UK Government-backed initiative dedicated to helping people with a disability stay mobile and independent by exchanging their qualifying Mobility Allowance to pay for the lease of a brand-new vehicle (which can be a car or a specialist WAV), a scooter or powered wheelchair.
Around 600,000 people currently use their mobility benefit to lease a vehicle through Motability, which means there are around 1 million people in the UK that qualify for a brand-new Motability vehicle who have so far chosen to not join the scheme.
Motability is available to those on:
the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement
Armed Forces Independence Payment
It’s a scheme that can work for everyone with a disability whether they drive or not, because if you qualify but you can’t actually drive yourself you can choose up to three people who can be put on the insurance to drive the vehicle on your behalf.
If you need a special adaptation to make the vehicle easier to drive or to get into and out of, many can be ordered and fitted at no extra cost.
It really is ‘worry-free’ motoring, because the overall package that comes with every Motability vehicle includes insurance, regular servicing and maintenance, breakdown cover, annual road tax, and a mileage limit that lets you travel 20,000 miles each year in the vehicle. All you really have to pay for is the fuel.
Some wheelchair users choose to order a specially adapted WAV instead of a car. Leasing a WAV means wheelchair users can travel in comfort while seated in their chair as either a passenger or in some vehicles as the driver.

If you do qualify for Motability and decide to lease a new vehicle through the scheme there are around 1600 cars to choose from and almost 4,000 Motability-accredited car showrooms up and down the country. Each one has fully trained and accredited Motability specialists who will take you out on a test drive and give you all the help and advice you’ll need to pick the right vehicle for you.

Before you visit a dealership, narrow down your search by finding a few vehicles that you like on the Motability website, the Motability section of your local car dealer’s website, or on the MotaClarity Motability car search.
